Flight Companion Privacy Policy

Overview

Flight Companion is a privacy-first iOS application designed for flight instructors to manage student records, training sessions, and endorsements. This privacy policy explains how the app handles your data.

The short version: All data is stored locally on your device. We don't collect, transmit, or store any of your information on external servers. There is no analytics, no tracking, and no cloud sync.

Information Storage

Flight Companion stores all student records, training session data, and endorsement information locally on your iOS device using SwiftData (which uses SQLite under the hood).

This includes:

Student names, contact information, and certificate details
Flight session logs with dates, times, aircraft information, and training notes
Endorsement records and associated documentation
Student photos selected from your device's photo library (if you choose to add them)
Aircraft information and specifications
Your instructor preferences and settings

All of this data remains on your device. The app does not transmit any information to external servers, cloud services, or third parties.

Data Collection and Transmission

Flight Companion does not collect or transmit data to any external servers. Specifically:

No analytics: We do not collect usage data, crash reports, or behavioral analytics.
No cloud sync: The app does not currently sync data to iCloud or any other cloud service.
No account creation: You do not need to create an account or provide any personal information to use the app.
No third-party SDKs: The app does not include third-party advertising, analytics, or tracking frameworks.
No network communication: The app does not connect to the internet or transmit data over the network.

Photo Access

If you choose to add a photo to a student record, Flight Companion requests access to your device's photo library. Photos are stored within the app's local database and are not uploaded or shared with any external service.

You can decline photo library access and the app will continue to function normally without student photos.

Data Export

Flight Companion allows you to export student data in the following formats:

PDF: Generate PDF documents for student records, endorsements, or training summaries.
JSON: Export raw data in JSON format for backup or transfer to another device.

Exported files are saved to your device and can be shared via standard iOS sharing mechanisms (email, AirDrop, Files app, etc.). You control where and how exported data is shared.

Data Deletion

You maintain complete control over your data:

Individual student records, sessions, and endorsements can be deleted at any time within the app.
Deleting the app from your device will permanently remove all stored data. This action cannot be undone.
There is no cloud backup or server-side copy of your data that persists after app deletion.

Children's Privacy

Flight Companion is designed for use by certificated flight instructors and is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to how the app handles data (for example, adding optional cloud sync in a future version), we will update this privacy policy and notify users through the app or the App Store update notes.

Third-Party Services

Flight Companion does not integrate with or share data with any third-party services, including:

No advertising networks
No analytics platforms
No social media integrations
No cloud storage providers (unless you manually export and upload data yourself)

Security

Because all data is stored locally on your device, the security of your data depends on your device's security settings. We recommend:

Using a strong device passcode or biometric authentication (Face ID / Touch ID)
Keeping your iOS device updated with the latest security patches
Regularly backing up your device via iTunes or iCloud (device backups are encrypted)

Flight Companion does not implement additional encryption beyond what iOS provides through device-level encryption and keychain storage.
